The Courage to Love Ourselves

One of the strongest forces of the human heart is the need for connection. Babies deprived of connection will not thrive and even may die. In the very least they will face major challenges throughout their life seeing the world as an unfriendly, dangerous place. Whether children or adults, the feeling of isolation or loneliness is one of the most painful of all human emotions. But though the yearning for connection is so primal, opening our hearts to ourselves or another is a scary proposition. It leaves us vulnerable to unmet expectations and disappointment, not to mention loss. Even in the best of situations, we sense the truth of impermanence that things will change, whether by shifting circumstances or by …

Gratitude Toward Ourselves

Amazing Grace: Change is Possible When I look back on my late teens and early 20’s, I did lots of crazy things. Reflecting on those days I realize I was walking nonchalantly and unconsciously through a minefield of potential dangers that could have spelled disaster. I have immense gratitude that one of those mines didn’t explode spiraling my life in a very different direction. Somehow, I saw the light before that happened. But, even if it did, I believe it’s never too late to turn our life around. This is a source of great inspiration to me. Going through a disaster can be a profound wakeup call. No matter how far we’ve strayed off course, in one mysterious moment we can see …

The Contagion of Goodness

An image from the Climate March in NYC. I write about it in a recent Huffington Post piece, "The Contagion of Goodness: NYC Climate March." Dear Friends, It’s been awhile since I’ve posted something on my blog and now I am happy to say that I’m back. I spent the summer teaching retreats (Spirit Rock and Europe) and then recharging as I reconnected with my first mentor and inspiration, Ram Dass, in Hawaii. I'm now eager to share reflections and inspirations that are moving me, and I hope will move you as well, to bring out our goodness and make a difference in the world. We plan to have regular blog offerings for you that will include not only my column but …

Michele Lilyanna on Awakening Joy for Kids – One Heart

Guest writer Michele Lilyanna has a new lesson in our Awakening Joy for Kids series. One Heart - Building Compassion and Empathy (Awakening Joy Step 9, Compassion) "This lesson helps us talk to the children about what can break our hearts and cause separation from our friends and family." "When I was a child in school in the 70s, I don’t ever remember being taught strategies for building compassion and empathy. I was told to be nice, and that was only if I was caught by the teacher doing something “bad.” However, for every child, “being nice” has a very different meaning and the act of “being nice” most often is a way a child stays out of trouble, which does not necessarily …

Wired For Compassion

As research on compassion meditation has shown, when we see someone suffering our natural response is to want to help. Awakening Joy speaker Rick Hanson, (www.WiseBrain.org) and author of Hardwiring Happiness, speaks about the physiological basis for compassion. Rick defines empathy as feeling and understanding how it is for another person. This means stepping outside of your own, limited view to see through another’s eyes or stand in his or her shoes. Mirror neurons activate empathy upon seeing what others are going through. There are two specific areas in the brain that are the seat of empathic response: the insula and the cingulate cortex. These are involved when we see—or even just imagine—other people suffering. Our brain automatically generates a …

Michele will be a guest contributor for Awakening Joy and we’ll be collecting her lessons HERE. For those of you with children or working with kids, I hope you find the lessons rewarding to share with them and the material helps nourish seeds of joy that keep bearing fruit over the years.  Thank you, Michele! -- James   A partial transcript of our conversation: JB: I want to say how happy I am that you’re …
